Biography
Professor O'Donnell attended Medical School at the Queen's University of Belfast in Northern Ireland between 1994 and 1999 where he graduated with distinction combined with the award of the Northern Ireland Medico-Legal Prize for first place in Forensic Medicine. He undertook his surgical training as a Specialist Registrar on the Northern Ireland Surgical Training Rotation between 2006 and 2015. He has completed both a Masters in Medical Science and a Medical Doctorate in research where he has established a prolific research pedigree with over 100 publications in PubMed Indexed Peer-Reviewed journals and more than 250 international and national presentations combined with many prestigious awards including the Society of Vascular Surgery International Scholar Award, Society of Academic Surgery Research Prize and Belfast City Hospital Young Investigator of the Year.
Completion of a Vascular Surgery Fellowship and appointment as an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the World-Renowned Mayo Clinic in the United States between 2012 and 2014 not only complemented his vascular surgery skills but facilitated endovascular proficiency in many minimally invasive treatments for complex arterial and venous disease. He passed the FRCS Exit Examination at first attempt in 2012 and remains the only vascular surgeon in Ireland to have been awarded the UEMS Vascular Surgery Gold Medal for First Place Honours in the European Board of Vascular Surgery Examination in 2015.
Professor O’Donnell remains very proud of his informal and relaxed approach to vascular surgery where he was humbled to have been a recipient of numerous awards for his safe, effective and personal approach to exceptional clinical care including the; UK Doctify Healthcare Professional (Medical) Patient Choice Award 2023; SME News Endovascular Surgeon of the Year 2024 (Belfast); GHP Patient Care Excellence Award 2025; and GHP Surgery Clinic of the Year 2025 (NI) with further nominations for Excellence in Patient Care and Surgical Clinic of the Year at the inaugural 2025 Private Healthcare Excellence Awards. He is a regular surgical tutor at the Royal College of Surgeons England and remains actively engaged in under-graduate and post-graduate education at Ulster University.
Professor O’Donnell provides high-quality, cutting-edge and customised clinical care for all of his patients. He remains an advocate for patient safety and recognises the absolute importance of the Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) program. He has recently transitioned from his previous role as an NHS Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon to the provision of vascular surgery care throughout Northern Ireland in numerous independent sector healthcare facilities including the Kingsbridge Private Hospitals Group with locations in Belfast, Ballykelly and Newry; the Ulster Independent Clinic and coming soon - Orthoderm Clinic in Hillsborough.
