The cost of private medical services can be settled using Private Medical Insurance (PMI) or using your own personal funds (self-funding).
Private Medical Insurance (PMI)
Private Medical Insurance is an insurance policy provided by a health insurance company. Such polices are underwritten by medical divisions of insurance companies which can provide many levels of clinical cover, often called plans, based on the various premiums that are paid by the patient to that insurance company.
Most companies require, you, the insured, to contact them before you attend a consultation or have a procedure. Prior to your consultation attendance or procedure, you should ask your insurer for a pre-authorisation number to cover your appointment or if required a series of appointments whichever is appropriate. Professor O’Donnell will also forward you a copy of your clinic consultation letter which will include procedural codes if warranted for you to present to your insurance company for authorisation. It is important to keep note of this authorisation number for all correspondence with Mark O’Donnell Vascular Surgery.
Mark O’Donnell Vascular Surgery works with all the major health insurance companies in the UK and Ireland which are listed below. As a registered provider with these companies, we will invoice them on your behalf.
Please check with your insurance company regarding the level of coverage your plan provides. Do not assume that your policy covers all aspects of your clinical appointments or procedures. In some cases, your policy may document a financial “excess” attached to your cover which you, the insured, have a liability to pay. Such additional excesses may only become apparent after your insurance company has settled their account with Mark O’Donnell Vascular Surgery. At this stage, you may receive an additional invoice to cover the “excess” difference.
Some insurers provide their cover in a different way where you, the patient, settle your account directly with Mark O’Donnell Vascular Surgery following your consultation or treatment. After provision of a receipt of payment, you then claim the payment back from them.
Benenden insured patients are now required to contact BUPA prior to treatment commencing.
